DIY: Soap for Mum this Mothers Day

By Kirsten McKechnie

Usually my mum receives some kind of baked-good-cookie-delight for Mother’s Day but this year I am mid-renovation with no stove so I decided something I could create with just the help of the microwave was a better option! I still wanted to make something special that would make my mumma feel special and hopefully a little pampered too so I decided to have a go at lovely fragrant soaps. I know she is going to love them and I hope you do too. The trickiest part of this DIY is collecting all the ingredients, I did a spot of online shopping for the soap base and you will need to find a store that stocks essential oils or you can always purchase these online too. After collecting the soap and oils it really is just a case of melt, mix and set.

What you’ll need:

Microwave safe bowl

Paddle-pop sticks or plastic stirrers

900g Goats milk melt-and-pour soap base (suspension formula)

Silicon moulds

Knife

Microwave

Grater

Essential oils and other mix-ins- be creative or follow my recipes below

To make 16 x Eucalyptus, Orange and Murray River salt:

20 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Zest from half an orange

2.5 tbsp Murray River salt flakes

To make 16 x Sweet orange, Nigella and Rosehip

25 drops sweet orange essential oil

1 tbsp nigella seeds

1 tbsp dried and ground rosehip

Method:

1. Cut your soap base into small pieces and place in a microwave safe bowl

2. Prepare your zest, mix-ins and have your essential oils to hand

3. Heat your soap in 25 second increments- stirring each time until it is completely melted (about a minute and a half)

4. Working quickly, add in the essential oils, mix-ins and zest, stirring to combine

5. Pour into the silicon moulds and let the soaps harden. This will take about an hour and a half

When the soaps have fully set you can pop them out and wrap them up ready to make the perfect Mother’s Day gift.
